The labeling of First, Second, and Third World countries originated in 1952, from an article by Alfred Sauvy in L’Observateur where he mentions “three worlds, one planet." First World countries were the U.S. and capitalist allies like Western Europe, Australia, and Japan. The Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies were tagged as Second World countries. Third World was in reference to non-aligned countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East.

These were Cold War designations that became outdated with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Second World designation doesn’t make much sense now. First World became…

It looks bleak. Civilization, under the pressures of predatory capitalism, resource depletion, war, and climate change, could wind up being a smattering of humanity scavenging for a cave to live in, wood to burn, and tech to salvage. These are the things we know and live with daily. A black swan event like an asteroid strike or supervolcano could just as easily take us back to the Stone Age.

Predatory capitalism is going to fight tooth and nail to stick around as long as possible. The atomic clock is set at just 100 seconds before midnight and ‘kiss your ass…

We are talking about the poorest of the poor on up to the upper-middle class. No matter how much money they make, they suffer from various stages of economic discomfiture — debt, overspending, or not being able to save for things they want.

They attended Trump rallies or, at the least, voted for him. They walk the grocery store aisles proudly with no mask and no vaccination (easy to identify if you mention their lack of a mask or ask if they are vaccinated — not recommended). They are highly prejudiced against people unlike them and are anti-immigrant.

They watch…

On June 15, 1976, I was heading home from work in my metal flake bronze 1974 Ford 4-wheel drive pickup (very proud of that truck). I had left work early to get ahead of expected street flooding from heavy showers moving in. It was about 2:00 p.m., and I was almost home.

I was turning off Westheimer Road onto Whitney headed towards Lovett Boulevard. I lived across the street from Pacifica Radio in the Montrose area of Houston. As I turned the corner, I noticed an increase in the rain. Water was rising swiftly. I would not make it to…

Fueled by a race between Florida and Texas governors to see who can be the most tyrannical Trump-like presidential contender, Texas Governor Greg Abbot has passed a law to enforce a right wing Evangelical Christian belief targeting women while they are in a vulnerable condition.

The law forbids abortions after electrical activity is detected in the developing cardiovascular nerve tissue about six weeks into pregnancy. The only exception after this point is a medical complication making death likely for the expectant mother if the pregnancy continues.

The ‘fetal heartbeat’ this law talks about has nothing to do with a beating…

The Republican Party plans to do to President Biden what they did to President Obama. They will block everything Biden attempts to do for this country from infrastructure to protecting the voting rights of all Americans. Then, at election time, they will point to his abysmal record and call him a failure because he could not get anything done.

These people do not care about the Constitution, American workers, voters’ rights, truth, justice, liberty, freedom, morality, minorities, pandemic victims, climate change, or depletion of resources. All they care about is power. They have been given the green light by American…

No esoteric musings about what went on before the Big Bang. Nothing cosmological. Sorry, Neil deGrasse Tyson. Maybe next time. More like prehistory, when time was measured by light or dark, cold or hot. Time existed but there was no objective way to measure its passing except through natural phenomena.

The oldest known calendar is twelve pits dug into the ground in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is a mesolithic monument to our ancestor’s quest for time management. It was created (probably not coincidentally) about the same time as agriculture began to be important to the human race. …

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Is everyone discounting the first part of this sentence? It is a sentence, despite that awkward comma behind “Militia”. It means, in modern English, that the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed upon because a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free State.

Historical references and perspective lend credence to the idea that “State”, in this…

At the velocity of languor
we mailed in our rebate
while sliding on marshmallows
through gates of redemption,
bartering our fate
with a coupon from Kmart.
Living our deaths
with ulterior motives,
meeting and mating
with copulent abandon,
stratifying corrugations
of color and sustenance,
Marvelizeing machinery
at the risk of absurdity,
proselytizing credulousness
at the speed of eternity,
bending light and truth
for the sake of modernity,
sampling realities
for their taste and precociousness,
tromping through time
like a corkscrew in space. …

Tortured by your unfulfilled lust for mass murder and mayhem? Become a politician. They can countermand health warnings and simple prophylactic practices condemning thousands to death by disease. This is what Trump did to America when he completely ignored Obama’s pandemic playbook. Some accounts have Trump throwing a copy in the trash.

You’ll have to aim high — at least state governor.

The latest ‘imperial’ decrees outlawing mask mandates and proof of vaccination from state governors Gregg Abbott and Ron DeSantis are just the latest examples of politicians deliberately making laws that result in people’s deaths. They do this legally…
